A trip to Alegranza

Usually you only see their silhouette in the distance, from Orzola or from the Mirador del Rio viewpoint, and only with good visibility. One of the few places on our beautiful archipelago that has not changed since I first came here 25 years ago, Alegranza!

Alegranza is located north of Lanzarote and is now an uninhabited, privately owned small island. It also forms the Chinijo National Park (Parque Natural del Archipielago Chinijo) with its neighbor islands La Graciosa, MontaƱa Clara and a few other smaller rocks. Together with the Islas Salvajes Islands this archipelago forms the main breeding ground of the Pardelas, in English Scopoli's shearwater. Pardelas were once a local delicacy, now of course well protected by some biologists and oceanographers on Alegranza.

The Islas Salvajes Islands, this is a group of small islands and rocks that belongs to Portugal and is located approximately in the middle between Lanzarote and Madeira. There, too, two people live permanently, who get every four weeks visit from a supply ship from Portugal. We'll do it with the sailboat... (By the way, there are no more lighthouse keepers, that has been also a great job ;)
