The Bougainvillea is one of the plants which attracts my attention most since I live here on Lanzarote. Countless of the often shrubby plants with their gnarled trunks and their marvelous blossoms in different colors adorn the gardens and facades of the houses here on Lanzarote. So I did not have to run far to make these photos, unfortunately only in three colors, that was owed to the short distance... some of the pictures I took in my patio, the other part I made right in front of my house on the street :)

Here some useful information on how to grow Bougainvillea

In Wikipedia (regarding botanical subjects always a reliable information source) one can read: The genus Bougainvillea was created in 1789 by Philibert Commerson. The name honors the French sailor and explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville, who also named the island of Bougainville. In course of his round-the-world sailing during 1766-69, however, Commerson's companion and secret lover Jeanne Baret discovered a plant of the genus in South America on the edge of Rio de Janeiro.

We read further that Jeanne Baret was probably the first woman to sail around the world - disguised as a man (you surely know already that I love sailing :) now I remember why I love the Bougainvillea...
